A complete refurbishment and remodelling of an existing 1960s beach house located in a prime position within walking distance of Harlyn Bay. The result is a light, airy and comfortable contemporary home, combined with traditional features, that takes inspiration from the local vernacular and surrounding context whilst paying respect to the existing character of the property.
The desire was to re-invigorate the original beach house by capitalising on its strong gable ended form and accentuating its key features. The design was achieved by a series of additions and interventions, such as fully opening up the gable ends on both sides of the property to maximise the dual aspect views whilst also extending the property to the rear to allow for increased internal floor space.

The master bedroom and master ensuite benefitted from the extension to the rear of the property to allow for a grander space and provide a strong visual connection with the rural views to the south. The clean white material palette and subtle textures both internally and externally were driven by the clients aspirations. This was combined with more traditional fixtures and fittings such as the free standing roll top bath to provide an element of luxury.
The front elevation was fully reconstructed within the existing roof line, which included the introduction of expansive glazing and white painted timber detailing to maintain that beach house appearance whilst capitalising on the expansive coastal views to the north.
To maximise the natural light into the property the ceilings on the first floor were vaulted to take advantage of the pitched roof form. The existing roof trusses were carefully maintained and redecorated to provide a feature within the new space and continue to maintain the character of the existing house.
A key requirement was to ensure the needs of a beach user were met, with consideration given towards storage, external showers and a sauna, which culminated in the addition of a small ’beach hut’ towards the front of the plot. The newly built ‘beach hut’ is a compact single storey flat roof building that reflects the appearance and materiality of the main house and also benefits from a wildflower green roof.

The house was fully renovated to create a high performing, low energy use home fit for modern day living. All building services were upgraded, along with increased levels of insulation and an improved building fabric to maximise its energy performance and reduce running costs.
“Michael and his team took great care in listening to our aspirations and understanding our requirements from the outset. They helped guide us through every stage of the design, planning and construction phases. We are thrilled with the result and really enjoy spending time in our newly remodelled coastal holiday home.”
