Located in an elevated position along the cliffs of the Atlantic Ocean, the house presents itself to the street as an unassuming simple cubist form whilst the rear of the property provides a sense of playfulness with a range of punctuations, terraces and shifting floor plates across the 3 levels to maximise the dramatic views of the Atlantic Ocean and enhance the connection with the outside from all levels.

A striking and playful contemporary holiday home that utilises the site’s great potential and coastal location by offering a site-specific response to maximise the seaward views and provide all the provisions needed for a sea side holiday home.
Split over 3 storeys, the 5 bedroom house provides direct external access from every level. The first floor open plan living space offers panoramic views of the coastline, the bedrooms located on the ground floor have direct access to a large terrace area and a games room is located on the lower ground floor which leads out onto the garden.

The client was keen to explore a range of architecturally playful interiors and combine this with their desire for a distinctive contemporary building form, with a material palette that was routed into its context.
The double height entrance hall benefits from a cantilevered feature staircase which leads you up to the main first floor open plan living space. The kitchen benefits from a large, frosted glass window that acts as the splashback whilst allowing natural light to wash over the countertop area. The oversized kitchen island provides a focal point whilst offering increased space for hosting. The lower ground floor games room, which includes a bar, pool table and cinema area, is accessed via a door is hidden into the reclaimed timber feature wall which acts as the back drop to the play space.

In contrast to the garden elevation, the client wanted the roadside elevation to be a simple contemporary white box to give an unassuming appearance to the street. By sinking the building into the landscape, thereby lowering it from the street view, overhanging the first floor mass and setting back the windows deep into the façade, we were able to provide a subtle level of interest into what was a simple yet striking contemporary form whilst minimising its impact onto the street.
The highly insulated and air tight house is fitted with renewable technologies such as a mechanical ventilation heat recovery system (MVHR) and an air source heat pump to ensure the highly performing sustainable home has a significantly low operational energy demand.

“We have had a long standing relationship with Michael and his team as they helped to achieve planning permission for different designs at Trelorna.
The attention to detail, enthusiasm and project management skills have shone through during the construction phase, allowing us to enjoy the process. We love the finished house. We have since appointed MTA to work on the redevelopment of another property that is within the family.”
